It's already the middle of the year! June....how time flies. It's a birthday month for many of my family and friends, including myself. Nothing seems more fun than a June birthday! :)
Do you have a June birthday? Share what your dreams are or what your birthday plans are!
There are no special plans for my birthday celebration - I HAD my birthday already and that was being able to go to Aspen to the InspireSong Songwriter Conference! That was awesome.
June marks the beginning of hubby's BBQ vending season and also umpiring for softball and baseball, something he also enjoys very much, working with the kids and coaches.
We will be back with Warren's Famous BBQ at Brainerd International Raceway, however only twice this year. First one will be June 16-18 for MOPS and then August 17-20 for NHRA, the big televised race and we also have a couple weddings to cater.
Of course from June 26-July 5 we will be selling fireworks. Our first tent will in Waite Park at the same old location in the parkinglot at West Side Liquor across from Scheels at the mall. Our second tent will be in Sauk Rapids in the parkinglot at Coborns. We will have someone running it for us. So you can shop at both locations :)
In between all that..... I hope to schedule some music events as well. We are hoping to get clearance to do a Tent Revival at the Sauk Rapids Fireworks Tent location after the fireworks sales are over and we have permission to use the tent. So stay tuned for updates!
This past weekend Warren participated in the Teen Challenge Fishing Tournament in Brainerd. They raised 1/4 Million Dollars that event for this ministry! Awesome isn't it?
They also did not have any food vendors, so Warren happened to ask if they'd mind if he could provide food. They gladly accepted and Warren donated 1/3 of the BBQ proceeds from the event back to Teen Challenge.
Warren also participated in the fishing tournament. He was the only "team" on a kayak. He caught 3 bass each about 5 lbs. He was first on the board for quite a while until more teams came in and beat his 5.02 lb bass out by 10 or so extra more pounds. However he had a blast and that's the main thing.
I brought the guitar with to work on some music but ended up playing a few songs for the guys from Teen Challenge who asked me to play. I might have some exciting news about a song and the Teen Challenge Leadership Institute.... so stay tuned on that as well.
May was a busy and super exciting month! It was actually supposed to be the start of a summer tour with the band Renewed (and songwriter Brendan Brooks) which was to conclude towards the end of June, culminating with a concert for us in Greeley, CO right after Toby Mac's set. However our summer tour had a few dates cancelled to where we will have to postpone to the fall to find other places to play. Although I was approved by Toby Mac to play at the Greeley Stampede Concert event, I couldn't hang out in Colorado financially for a month and so headed back home. :(
However Brendan Brooks and Renewed will still be playing this event!
Yet, my 3 weeks of music touring was filled with ministry, learning, growing, writing music with other artists and mentors from Nashville, serving twice in the worship service at Joy Community Fellowship Church in Hot Springs, playing live music in an Antique Store and making new friendships and deepening ones started last year!
My first music and rest stop was Joy Community Fellowship Church in Hot Springs, SD playing for their worship service on my way to and from the InspireSong Conference as our pastor friends there graciously hosted me. Thank you Pastor Bill and Pat for a wonderful time!
Then I stayed in Arvada, CO with Mike & Kim Eaton from the band Renewed for a few days, waiting on the rest of the gang to gather there who also was going to be at InspireSong. I had some awesome "girl time" with Kim Eaton going to her beautician to get my hair done, do some shopping and eating at her son's awesome deli! Wow that guy can cook! What a fun needful time to spend with another girl singer/songwriter!
On Wednesday Night (May 17th) we all (Tony Chung from Canada, Brendan Brooks from Wisconsin, Renewed from Colorado and I) had a concert in Lakewood, CO at Lakewood Church of Christ for a benefit for New Horizons House (https://newhorizonshouse.org/) a ministry that helps girls and women caught in sex trafficking. We raised $5000 that night for this ministry!
Here are some pictures from the concert at Lakewood Church of Christ in Lakewood, CO
Next came a scary road trip to Aspen the following day. We had planned to leave in the morning, however I-70 leading to Aspen was closed due to an accident as a snow storm had blown in, which began to manifest itself in Lakewood after our concert with a lot of rain/snow mix....
Around 3 pm we got the "go ahead" from those "in the know" already in Aspen, that the Interstate was cleared and we could sneak in between snow storms. We had fairly decent road conditions to the Eisenhower tunnel, but thereafter until Veil, CO it got pretty nasty and a semi in front of us slid sideways down the mountain interstate.... keeping a safe distance, with flashers on for those following, we made it through the worst part and after Veil there were dry roads and sunshine all the way to Aspen!
InspireSong Songwriter Conference greeted us with an Open Mic nite already in progress (as we missed Registration and Greetings due to our late arrival), however everyone was glad to see us safe and sound. Then we checked into our hotel.
Early the next morning our sessions began with teachings from our many mentors who came up from Nashville to teach a variety of sessions.
Topics ranged from: Preparing your song from the inside out. Discovery Process. Songwriting Inspiration. Writer's Block. Complex vs Simple Song. Listening to the Holy Spirit. Song Critiques. Authentic Songwriting. the "Now What?" Panel discussing what to do with your song and how to get it "out there". Publishing. Copyrights.
The following day's session included a Co-Writing workshop with mentors writing a song in front of us and then us attendees being divided into groups, each with a mentor to write a song. We had about 15 minutes with our mentor starting us out and two hours time. My group was paired with Seth Mosley, producer from Nashville.
Eight of us attendees put our heads together and finished our song "Victory!" to present it after supper, as did each of the other groups with their song. We heard some great music that night!!
Here are some photos from InspireSong Songwriter Conference at Crossroads Church:
There were some great quotes I want to share with you from the InspireSong Conference:
"God will use you, get rid of the sin of comparison". Sue Mohr, Inner Vizion.
"Best songwriting is always when there's no fear." Seth Mosley.
"If you see some success, there was always some point of risk". Tony Woods
"Songs are everywhere, you got to pull them out of the air". Ben Glover (via Matt Armstrong)
"Speak truth to yourself. Be around confident people who pour confidence into you. Get alone with God." Matt Armstrong.
"Art is a concept - but make it where you don't forget it". Benji Cowart
"Write in such a way that someone can say 'that's my anthem'". Matthew West
"Write a song you have lived and that's what people will listen to". Benji Cowart
"If men can sing your song, everyone in the church sings." Jenna Cowart
After the Conference was over it was hard to say good bye to old friends and the new one made at this event, however we all hope, the Lord willing, to see each other next year at InspireSong 2018!
Before heading home, I hung around in Arvada, CO with Renewed for a few days to be there for their rehearsal for an upcoming concert in Kansas before I headed to Hot Springs to serve Joy Community Fellowship once more for their Sunday Worship Service and on Memorial Day Monday to play "Live" at Pistol Patti's Antiques & More, a new store that recently opened in Hot Springs. I know the owner couple was super blessed by the music and are eagerly awaiting my next CD release with the song "Grateful Heart" recorded, it is their favorite song!
Here are a few photos from the Rehearsal, Sunday Service and Live Music:

There are some new videos up on my website that you definitely will want to check out. They are on my Photos/Videos page. http://www.samscales.com/photosvideos.html
The videos are from the InspireSong Conference with our songwriting group presenting our song "Victory!" to everyone. (Titled: Inspiresong 2017 Co-writing Session Final Song: Victory).
Three songs from my set at Lakewood Church of Christ in Lakewood, CO and a recording taken by Pat Martin during my live music set at Pistol Patti's Antiques in Hot Springs SD.
Also tons of pictures from my latest music travels.
I also want to express my deepest gratitude for your prayers for travel mercies and safety. Your prayers were heard as we had some scary roads going to Aspen. All my other road travels were smooth and I stayed alert and awake for which I'm super grateful! God provided for my needs on this trip and gave me sweet fellowship with His artistic people!
Special "Thank You" goes out to all of you who graciously hosted me and gave me a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, food to eat and lots of great awesome fellowship!
Shawn & Shanda Hinnant
Bill & Pat Martin
Mike & Kim Eaton
A deep 'Thank You' also goes out to:
The Annabelle Inn (it's like coming home! Thank you for the great service)
and Crossroads Church of Aspen for hosting Inspiresong 2017! You guys are awesome!
Remember to check my Facebook Music Fan Page regularly as I update there pretty much every day and use the "Track" button to stay in the know about my next concerts/music events.
Until next month - or other "cool news" I need to share right away.... speak truth to yourself and spend time alone with God. :)
It's an early morning with last minute preparations for my trip to South Dakota, Colorado and the InspireSong Songwriter Conference in Aspen. Squeee!!! I'm excited! It's going to be a great time visiting friends, enjoying fellowship, being a servant, learning and hanging around other Creatives! It's always good to get new inspiration!
The last month or so I've had a little bit of a health scare but that issue is fine, however when I get back from my trip there's still something I want to check into. Please keep me in prayer for health related issues.
We are pretty much done with remodeling our kitchen! So thankful to have counters back and a kitchen I can use. Taco Bell got old quick! The kitchen looks fabulous! There's still some minor things we need to do, but that won't take long. Hopefully.... you know how it can go with an older house and things you discover as you remodel!
Last weekend (May 4-8) we were in Bixby, Oklahoma for the Bixby BBQ n Blues Festival and KC BBQ Association Cookoff. Hubby Warren had entered the contest and was in his element preparing his meats for the judges and for People's Choice. We had our good friends Michael and Cat Jones helping us in the booth with their kids, Mike and Hannah! I know all four had such a blast, it was wonderful to see our friends enjoy themselves ....and the food! We had a couple band teens help us in the tent during the People's Choice time to hand out food, while Warren and I were concentrating on his competition meats and presentation.
He got super excited when they announced that he placed 5th in the Chicken Category with his 'Lollipop Chicken Legs' out of 67 Competitors.
Here are a few pictures of the event:
May and June were to be the months to begin an exciting tour after the InspireSong Songwriter Conference in Aspen, hitting the road with the band 'Renewed' and Singer/Songwriter & Recording Artist 'Brendan Brooks'.
However we all are quite disappointed in some of the cancellations received for this tour due to issues within the churches (which I will not get into). So I think we need to pray for the body of Christ as a whole, that our focus would remain on Christ, the gospel and the Kingdom of God.
The only date remaining will be May 17th in Lakewood, Colorado where we will be doing a benefit concert together before heading to InspireSong on May 18th - May 21.
The tour has been postponed into August/September and my dates in Clovis, NM also are on hold until that timeframe.
I guess I can look at it in a positive way....at least I'll be able to help Warren with all his BBQ events he will be doing this summer, which I'm sure he's thankful for although he was supportive of me touring. Even though I'm disappointed because of the postponement, I also know and realize that timing is everything and God has good reasons for the delay and I'm going with that and have peace about it.
In the meanwhile I'll be looking at doing more local dates and going back to Eau Claire, WI as I know one place, the Barnabas Coffee House, is waiting to hear from me to come back for a music evening with them.

Now I better finish the rest of my packing so I can get on the road in time to meet up with my friends in South Dakota for supper tonight!
I would covet your prayers for this trip: Safety on the road, being a blessing to friends, strangers, musician friends (old and new), that I follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and pray for finances (food, gas) to come in for this trip. Thank you so much!
Until next time..... wishing God's grace, blessings and His fullness of joy for all of you.
Aren't you as excited as I am that spring is here?? YEY! How are y'all doing? Hope this newesletter finds you well.
It's going to be a short one this time as we have had a very busy time on the home front which I'll be sharing about. Music wise we only had one extra concert (besides playing in OK) in March for Place Of Hope's "Empty Bowls" Fundraising Event in St. Cloud. So I'm gonna jump right in.
You should see our livingroom and kitchen!! We had the crazy idea to remodel the kitchen cabinets, so now they as well as the contents are sitting in my livingroom! Stuff ALL OVER THE PLACE! No sink or counters.....sooo.....we've been "camping" eating Taco Bell on paper plates!! Viva Taco Bell!!!
Our trip to Oklahoma to see Warren's mom was SO cool! It just revived me to see family, get to help mom with her garage sale, help pack stuff up, hang with the sisters in law, see long time friends and have a crazy time together - and spend time with hubs for a whole week without bus trips or interruptions! NICE!
On Friday next week (April 14th) I'll be holding my very first LIVE Facebook Class about how Essential Oils have made such a difference in my wellness journey as Warren and I are working on getting chemical free and staying healthy. If you are interested, email me back and I'll add you to the Facebook event (if you are on Facebook). At some point (when the house is back together) I want to do a Make-N-Take class at my home. So if you want to know more about how Essential Oils are helping me, I'd love to share with you, just let me know that you'd like to be notified when I do the home class.
I'm also thinking about doing another jewelry open house before I leave for the tour. However THAT all depends upon if my kitchen is back to being functional and my livingroom cleared out of all the stuff piled in it! If not, I may just see if I can have a class room at our church to set up for the day. I'll keep you guys posted....
March's newsletter was sent when we were down in Oklahoma, so I pretty much already shared about the music opportunities we had while on the road. Once home, the following weekend was the "Empty Bowls" event, an annual fundraiser for Place Of Hope in St. Cloud, MN. Place of Hope cares for the homeless and those who need extra help and Empty Bowls is a reminder that someone's bowl somewhere is often empty. This year the event was on a Saturday which was actually very cool because it could be held longer hours than before on a Sunday. This time there were also lots of artisan vendors present who all contributed to the event as well.
Lots of 'live music' throughout the building by amazing artists and musicians who donated their time! It was so cool, because where my booth was set up, I could hear the artists from the front lobby and some who were playing in the Multi Purpose Room! Perfect spot for sure!
Warren and I played in the Fellowship Hall this year which was an experience! LOL! I'm SO grateful for Pat our soundman, because he made miracles happen with the system that was there!
However it was SO fun to see my little "fan/groupie" gang come to enjoy the event and music! THANK YOU all SO much for coming! As we miss our families, you guys are the family away from the family, if you know what I mean. You are very much appreciated and loved! We can't wait to see you again!
Unfortunately we don't have any pictures from that event of us playing. Anyone took any pictures?

June 25 - Greely Stampede, Greely CO to end the tour with Renewed & Brendan Brooks)
Here's a sneak peak of the tour bus, bought by the band Renewed for the tour! I'm so super excited to get to be part of this adventure! Did you know that this bus used to belong to DeGarmo & Key?
Lots of music history in that bus and we get to continue it!
There will be more details added to the tour, so keep watch on Facebook for tour updates or keep checking back on the "Tour Dates" page for a concert near you if you are from out of state (which means out of state from Minnesota :) If you sign up through the "Track" button, you'll automatically get an e-mail notification when I'm at a music event near you!
Hope to see some of you in St. Cloud at the Burn 24/7 event - or - on our tour!
Blessings to all,
The fear of the Lord leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. Prov. 19:23.
How is everybody this March so far? For some of you on the East Coast it got pretty cold and snowy, even for us up North we got some of the white stuff with cold temps after nice 60's one week. Crazy weather for sure, but typical this time of year. But, I don't want to talk about weather really, except............we have escaped the wintry scenes and gone south..... HAHA.
We've been having a great trip filled with some music gigs and enjoying visits with friends in Iowa and in Tulsa, OK before arriving at our end destination to help Warren's mom move out of her rental. So this is the report from the road this time.
At home we have had two months of very busy times with Warren working pretty much around the clock and his weekends were filled with refereeing for basketball games. So this spring break with no school bus driving, Warren was free to go help his Mom down south get stuff packed up and moved out of the rental she lives in. It's been really SO nice to be around family, seeing his sisters and the rest of the family who lives here and coming together in "manpower" to get this done!
Our drive down was a little tougher this time, I think it is because we were so tired with all the work and preparations prior to the trip. We each pretty much had to switch up driving after 2 hours behind the wheel. So lots of stops which slows down the progress, but rather arrive safely then try to push through to make time. It's just wisdom.
Now we are preparing for a garage sale and while mom is getting things sorted out, there's not much for me to do, so I decided to get my March News out before we get busy again. Warren has taken mom's car to the shop for an oil change and checkup. Nice to be able to do these things which we can't do for her with living so far up north. Now to our adventures on the road....
The first stop on our trip south was our concert morning on Saturday, March 11 at Caffe Tempo (which is "time" in Italian). Thank you to our friend Larry for coming out and Paul Wiersgalla for inviting us!
After the concert we headed to Iowa, visiting with our friends from our home church who have moved there and graciously offered us a place to crash for the night. Then we headed to Tulsa, OK. After finally getting there 10.5 hours later which should have been an 8.5 hour drive....we enjoyed some awesome fun and fellowship with our longtime friends Cat & Michael Jones and their (now so grown up) kids Mike and Hannah! We had an absolute blast, including an impromptu concert which Cat videoed live on Facebook. If you'd like to see it, it's also on my FB Music page. Cat is an accomplished singer herself with a voice that's just amazing! I love her sound and sweetness as she sings. She should be on the radio! Seriously! Then young Mike is equally becoming the musician himself playing the trumpet. He is currently in the High School Band, but has also recorded a song with his dad Michael playing the keys, mom Cat singing and Mike improvising some cool trumpet fills in their own version of a Christmas song. Ah what fun to hang out with them. Music talk, silliness (as you can see), memories and "you remember when's". Those are the times I wish they lived closer!

So please watch my Facebook Page or check back here on my website again as I will update the exact time (on the TOUR DATES page) when we will be playing before you come out. Hopefully I will have this confirmation a few days ahead and not the day of.....
Also.....WATCH FOR A possible MUSIC DATE IN APRIL in AVON, MN..... :)
Remember that in MAY-JUNE I will be in South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and then on Tour with "Renewed" and "Brendan Brooks". (See "Tour Dates" page). Excited and looking forward to fruitful music events!
Well, everyone is back at the house and ready to work packing some more stuff, so I'm signing off to get back to work.
May the rest of the month bring you calmer weather and may those be comforted who have lost property or even loved ones in the fires in the Texas/OK Panhandle, those affected by tornadoes and by recent snow storms. Crazy weather all over the place....
I pray in those times we all would seek and find comfort in God's never failing love and that He is the source to go to for all our needs and restoration of what is lost.
Remember to watch the "Tour Dates" page for updated event times and new events. Of course if you are connected with me on Facebook you should hopefully get those updates right away.
Until next month! Love y'all! Sam.
I Currently I am sitting in my sunny bright home-away-from-home-office, which is the couch in the living room at my friend's house in Sheboygan Falls, WI. Her little Papillon "Raji" is perched on the back of the couch beside my head, watching me type - well he was anyways. He's getting a tad sleepy after the hard work of observing computering. He is the cutest little thing!
My visit to Wisconsin actually entails getting to visit with my cousin Juergen from Germany who is here on business in Milwaukee. Since my friend's house wasn't far, I decided to visit her while he is working. This Valentines Day we will have dinner together with my daughter Cindy and tomorrow we will spend the afternoon together to go bumming around in Milwaukee, shopping, eating and sharing memories! So thankful we were able to connect this time as all our schedules worked out to make it happen!
At home I've also been busy creating new jewelry... this coming weekend (Saturday, Feb. 18 - see Upcoming Events) I'll be revealing my newest jewelry line Isaiah2816, made with beads from semi-precious stone, dyed stone and imitation Venetian glass beads, with/or without cool themed charms! Super excited about the look. Bracelets will be up for sale first, necklaces are to follow as I still am in the designing process. You can see them on my FaceBook Music Page already!
Also there's a few more new "Diffuser" bracelets I've created and added to that line. The lava beads in these bracelets are great for absorbing your favorite Essential Oil so you can wear it throughout the day - and then "reload" the next day with another EO or the same again, depending on your needs.
Currently I'm still booking events for the year. If you have any suggestions or know of a group of people who would be blessed by my music, please get in touch with me and let me know. Last month I've mentioned that I'm working on playing in Clovis, New Mexico as well, because I'll be visiting there for about 3 weeks! It'll be great to see my "old hometown" again and all my friends there! I'm still open for a few dates there! Contact me!
I'll also be going on tour with the band "Renewed" and "Brendan Brooks" in the month of June. We will start in CO and be coming through SD, ND, MN, WI, IL, MI, KS, MN and back to CO. So keep watching the Tour Dates for updates. Let me know if you would like us to come play at your venue, church or festival.
You can also utilize the "TRACK" button up top on the left to receive my new concert dates alerts directly to your e-mail. Sign up is easy and quick, just click on the button to do so.
In May again, I'll be attending the InspireSong Songwriter Conference in Aspen, CO. I'm super excited about that and can't wait to see all the new friends I made there last year - and of course make new ones!!
I've also been writing on a new song called "Throw Away People"....it'll be an interesting song dealing with how quickly we dismiss people when they no longer fit into a "category", however, God sees them differently. This song was inspired by seeing a homeless vet sleeping in a doorway cove in New Orleans on one of my travels.

Something has been bugging me as of late and I've found myself in a lot of frustration and kind of getting angry about all the crazy stuff we hear of late. I'm sure many of you may have felt or are feeling the same "pressures" that are seemingly all around us.
I know that when I feel that way, my unrighteous anger or reaction to things are not God's righteous anger... so I've been meditating on the following scriptures and want to share those with you.
To me, the Word of God is just so amazing...such Words of Wisdom that so totally make sense.
What to do when you feel ANGRY:
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. James 1:19, 20.
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Ephesians 4:26
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. Proverbs 15:1
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6:14
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. Proverbs 14:29
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Proverbs 16:32
Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:9
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink; for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee. Proverbs 25:21, 22
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice; And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31, 32.
A wise man feareth and departeth from evil, but the fool rageth and is confident. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly; and a man of wicked devices is hated. Proverbs 14:16, 17
But now ye also put off al these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Colossians 3:8.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. Psalm 37:8
God is good and I'm grateful He loves us and desires that we keep on His straight and narrow path that leads to life and if we follow Him we will travel successfully.
Love you all. Sam

Psalm 100 Scripture
1 Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.
3 Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name.
5 For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.
